This was a lovely project to design for a family moving back to Hertfordshire from the Caribbean who wanted to combine a modern look whilst retaining a homely feel. They were starting from scratch with furniture but wanted to ensure that the pieces would withstand a young, expanding family’s lives. We selected a fairly neutral base palette, adding texture and colour with the soft furnishings and artwork. To pair the needs of the family with a contemporary style, the storage solutions had to be carefully planned to keep the house clutter free.
In the master bedroom, we incorporated a walk-in wardrobe in a separate area to keep the main sleeping area calm and light. The bespoke emperor bed was finished with an upholstered studded headboard and dressed with bespoke cushions in soft grey tones. This created a calm, adult space with a few beautifully detailed pieces of furniture including a dressing table and bedside tables.
We had a lot of fun designing the playroom using a world map mural, a brightly coloured sofa and bold coloured accessories. A bespoke wall media unit provided the much-needed storage for the toys and display areas for the children’s art! Colourful bookshelves were used to keep the books tidy – we love how the illustrations on the books become a feature of the room too.
When planning how best to use the space in the lounge, we needed to consider the addition of a wood burning stove as well as positioning the TV. To achieve this, we built a false chimney breast with a recess for the TV to tidy away all of the unsightly cables. This meant we could add some beautiful, slim console tables either side topped with contemporary lamps and simple styling. The corner sofa left a perfect space for a bespoke buttoned footstool and a loveseat for curling up on in front of the fire.
